W.H. Powers has donated the rest
of his wood collection to the club. The wood will be auctioned to
the members with the proceeds going to the club. Mr. Powers is a
former member of the club. He is having health problems and must stay
away from sawdust. As a woodworker, his interests included building
furniture, wood turning, and scroll saw work. His turned bowls were
laminated from hundreds of small pieces. He made scroll saw pictures
that were finished on both sides instead of mounted on a backer
board. He was also a member of the International Wood Collectors
Society and he had wood from all over the world.
There will be about 200 pieces of
wood to auction and there are at least 50 different species. Some of
more unusual pieces are Hibiscus, Bishop Wood, Raintree, Orchid,
Avocado, Purpleheart, Ebony, Lignum Vitae, Cocobolo, Persimmon, and a
few burls. None of the pieces are longer than two feet. About 50 of
them would be suitable for turning, the rest best used for scroll
work. Many have been planed to ½ or 1/4: thick. There is also a
boxed set of turning chisels and a few other assorted chisels. Bob
Eslinger will serve as auctioneer.
