2 x 4 Contest Rules for 2024

The 2 x 4 contest will be judge at the spring picnic on April 14, 2024

Rule #1:     Registered FWWC members may enter one project only. 

Rule #2:     Entries must be created using one ordinary construction grade 2 x 4 x 8’ stud.  The entry may be of any design the creator thinks will win.  It may be useful or useless, tall or short, wide or narrow, thick or thin or any combination of the above.

Rule #3:     The entry may be created using conventional forms of hand-crafted woodworking such as typical flat work, intarsia, turning, carving and wood burning etc.  Entries may be produced using conventional woodworking equipment such as saws, drills, jointers, planers lathes and hand tools.  Entries using electronic programmable or computer-based equipment such CNC or laser cutting/burning are not allowed.

Rule #4:     The entry must use at least two thirds (2/3) of the 2 x 4.  Sawdust and shavings count toward the two thirds.

Rule #5:     Assembly: The entry may use nails, screws, staples, wire, dowels, glue or anything else deemed required and appropriate to either join components and/or assemble the project.  These components should not display a significant visual impact to the project.  Intarsia projects may use a wooden backer board not part of the original 2×4 for the back-support piece.

Rule #6:     Finishes: The project may be presented either finished, using common wood finishes or unfinished.  Abstract or overly ornamental finishes should be avoided.  Common finishes include paint, stain, dye, varnish, shellac, lacquer and oil.

Rule#7:      Accessories: Hinges, locks, hasps, handles and other small hardware devices necessary to complete the project are permissible.  No fancy hardware please.  Also acceptable are small decorative components to help convey the projects theme as well as small functional components to demonstrate how the project works.  Examples would be marbles for a marble game, pens, pencils, cell phones for a desk organizer etc.

Rule 8:       Design itself:  Original designs are preferable but not mandatory.

Rule 9:       Entries from previous contests are not permissible.

Rule 10:     The Golden Rule – And Most Important – You must have FUN making your project.  While the contest is judged, it is still about having fun and participating.

                  Participants having questions or concerns of their project or any other project with respect to eligibility and compliance to the rules are encouraged to contact the contest chairman (usually the club Vice President) or any board member for clarification.
