Florida West Coast Woodworkers

March turrners meet

This month Denny and a chunk of wood with Hibiscus written on it. No one ever seen a Hibiscus bush that big before, but that’s what was written on. It had a very white sapwood with a two-tone brown heartwood. It appeared to have come from the crotch of the tree. We discussed it and decided to turn small bowl from it. He started by rounding up the outside  which necessitated moving the center point several times,to get maximum use of the wood.

This month we tried using our new video camera connected to the projector to show better how tools were being used. It was very successful as you can see from some of the pictures of the screen.

Denny was able to finish most of the bowl  but ran out of time to make a finial for the top. He made that the next day and you can see the results in the final picture. The unusual colors of the wood created a very striking little bowl.
