Florida West Coast Woodworkers

January 2018 Demo meeting – Sun & Fun shop

There was a great turnout to see the wood shop at the Sun and Fun RV park on Fruitville Rd. Marvin Stolzfus, one of our own,  was a winter visitor at Sun and Fun before he became a full time resident. Sun and Fun has been around since the 1950s. While they are mainly a turning club, they have all the tools for any kind of woodworking, as you can see from the pictures.

There are 14 lathes, two cabinet saws, 3 drill presses,  4 band saws, and every kind of sander you can imagine, just to name a few of there power tools. The wood shop is just one of the attractions at Sun and Fun, they have 180 different organized recreational activities  you can participate in. Because they are designated as a resort you can only stay there for 9 months a year so the place is practically empty during the summer. Most of the tools in the shop were donated and become the property of S&F, but the club has bought some of the tools, mainly lathes. They raise money by charging for lockers where members store tools, $60/year, along with a silent auction of thing built by members.

Everyone using a lathe has to take a week long class which they charge for. When non members come in to repair or make something they are in couraged to make a donation.

They are open 7days a week from 8:00 till noon, 1:00 to 5:00, and 6:00 to 9:00. Members volunteer to by monitors for one of the shifts. They open the shop and  supervise the people working there.

The building is very old and leaks when it rains. Last summer during the hurricane there was a foot of water in the shop. S&F has promised to build a new shop, maybe this year.

We poked around, looked at the tools, and talked to each other and some of the residents who came out. Then Marvin told us about the place and the club president answered our questions.

It was great fun and very interesting.
