Florida West Coast Woodworkers

Monthly Meeting Bowl- Turning- Joe Channey

President Peasley called the meeting to Order at 7:00 PM

There were 37 members and 9 guest at the June meeting. I don’t know why all the snow birds have left. The heat index was only 115deg. in Venice today.

  • President Peasley asked our visitors to introduce themselves. We had 9 enthusiastic guests. Guest attendance in recent months has been up with many becoming members.
  • The winner of last month’s drawing to award an educational grant of $1,000 went to Mario Fajardo, who finally showed up to collect his reward. Mario told us that he plans to attend the Tampa School and will then dazzle us with his new skills in a presentation next year.
  • In this month’s demo Mad Joe Channey is going to show us how to turn those Rosewood blanks that Tom and Marvin are passing out into valuable resources for the food bank. A valuable community effort where 97% of what is raised goes to the cause.

Presentation:

Joe Channey: FWWC wood turning savant presented on tools, techniques and safety to quickly and easily create works of art bowls from wood blanks.

Joe and his support team set up a mini lathe and tools in the front of the Advantage meeting space. After a short intro, where Joe told us he has been turning for 12 years, originally out of necessity, now obviously as a passion. Joe talked about safety procedure and the absolute necessity to wear a protective face mask.  Then the wood chips began to fly.

Joe loaded a Rosewood block, snugged up the tail and tested the set up, he then stopped the lathe to mount the tool rest.  He turned a tenon on the back of the bowl then reversed it into the chuck, putting the tail on the block for added support. He picked out a 3/4” bowl gouge and began turning it at 1200 RPMS.  As Joe worked the blank into a bowl shape, he switched to a ½” gouge for more precision and a finer cut Before Joe began the inside cut, he rounded out the lip so that it would be less sharp and less dangerous.  Joe said that as you cut away material it is important to stop the lathe and move your tool rest so that you can maintain leverage with the gouge. (The danger is that if the tool overhangs the rest too far it can pull the tool out of your hand, due to leverage.)  Understand how deep you wish to cut, you can turn off the lathe and use your finger as a gauge to determine depth and thickness.

Once the inside of the bowl has taken shape, turn off the lath and mount a “Cole Mouth Jaw” to finish up the outside of the bowl. Joe used Tom Falcone’s a very pretty custom-made Cole mouth jaw, an impressive piece of workmanship in its own right.  Joe warned us not to be too aggressive when using the Cole mouth as the piece can slip out.  After just 3 minutes Joe had a functional bowl and showed us what we need to do to complete all the steps in the process.

Larry Simmons gave an impromptu demo on how effective his show & tell shop vac cyclone cart really is, in cleaning up the mess of chips Joe created.

Once the demo was complete Joe offered to teach members one-one if they wish in how to turn in his shop where he has a number of lathes at the ready. Tom Falcone reminded us that the Bowl project in the Manatee Food bank’s their major annual fund raiser and that the bowl project has become a major attraction to the event to be held on November 22nd at Lakewood Ranch between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
