Florida West Coast Woodworkers

August 2022 monthly meeting

It’s been a while since I posted to the website, mainly because we have been video taping the meetings and putting them on YouTube for everyone to access. But I realized that I had not been putting the link to the videos on the website. To view the last six meetings, go to YouTube and search for Florida West Coast Woodworkers, then pick on subscribe so you will be able to get to the channel faster next time. Here is a link to the August meeting: A summary of the meeting is below.

CNC for everyone.

August Meeting Summary

We had a great turn out for a hot summer night, 26 people including 4 guest. Gregg, our president, was present after recovering from his health issues.

Announcements:

Christmas party: He announced that we are planning to resume our annual Christmas party, after three years of COVID worries. It will be on the second Wednesday in December, the 14th, at our regular meeting time. The club will supply turkey and ham and everyone attending will bring a pot luck to round out the menu.

Tool donations: Greg thanked Mario and Joe for their donation to the club, of some tool they weren’t using, which we sold on Ebay.

Bowls of hope: We are still looking for the first bowl to be brought in for the Manatee food bank. For all we non turners, we can make cutting boards, spoons, boxes anything the food bank can auction off to raise money.

Gregg introduced Scott Cenicola, the manager of the Rockler store in Brandon, who told us of the special benefits for club members.

  • 10% discount on all full priced purchases, except power tools
  • Free shipping on items ordered through the store, no minimum
  • after 20 members visit the store the club gets a gift certificate.

Program:

Gregg started out to destroy the myth that CNC was not real wood working. It’s just a tool like a table saw or planner.

You still have all the same steps that all woodworkers have, just different tools.

Show & Tell

John Theimer brought in the bird he started carving at the last meeting. He finished it with a dye instead of painting it.

Gregg showed a tray he made with his CNC, for his wife to put her coffee cups on in his living room. He then decided to make a marking knife which he will use to make hand cut dovetails.

Judy Stickney brought in two birds she carved; a small puffin and a large duck . They both had a lot of detail.

Pat Kerr showed the cabinet he is making to match the other one in his living room. The beach design was carved on his CNC, but he wasn’t satisfied, even though the outside was beautiful. So he veneered the inside of the cabinet with birds eye maple to make it beautiful also. He then showed a piece that was carved on his CNC of a herd of wild horses running. A friend of his did all the programing for his machine.

Drawing

Randy and Mike drew names for the raffle and door prizes.
