Florida West Coast Woodworkers

February 2021 Zoom meeting

For the second month in a row we have had a live speaker at our zoom meeting. The first zoom meetings were mainly “show and tell” by our members. Which was great, because we all like to show off our stuff. Then we started adding video demonstration as a program, in addition to the “show and tell”. And, now for the two month in a row, we have had live speakers joining us with slide shows and Q&A. I think we are getting the hang of this. By the time we are able to get back to live meetings, we will have it down pat. Isn’t that the way it always is!

At the February meeting we had 32 members present and our guest speaker.

President’s Report: President Al reported the Club received eight Norfolk Pine logs from a local arborist. The logs were transported to Marvin’s home with the help of a few club members.  Marvin will store the logs until they milled into blanks and slabs. The Board is hopeful that some of the wood will be made into bowls and other objects for donation to local organizations.

Program:

His focus is on hardwood processing in manufacturing and the effects of interaction between wood and water.  His remarks this evening focused on the relationship between wood and water. He began by mentioning two valuable resource books.  The first is the Wood Handbook which can be downloaded for free from the US Dept of Agriculture [Forest Products Laboratory] website. https://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/fplgtr/fplgtr113/fplgtr113.htm. The second was Understanding Wood by Bruce Hoadley.

Below is a link to the notes from Dr Brian Bond presentation on Wood Movement.
